A statistical gap-filling method to interpolate global monthly surface ocean carbon dioxide data ArchiMer
Jones, Steve D.; Le Quere, Corinne; Roedenbeck, Christian; Manning, Andrew C.; Olsen, Are.
We have developed a statistical gap-filling method adapted to the specific coverage and properties of observed fugacity of surface ocean CO2 (fCO2). We have used this method to interpolate the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) v2 database on a 2.5°×2.5° global grid (south of 70°N) for 1985–2011 at monthly resolution. The method combines a spatial interpolation based on a “radius of influence” to determine nearby similar fCO2 values with temporal harmonic and cubic spline curve-fitting, and also fits long-term trends and seasonal cycles. Interannual variability is established using deviations of observations from the fitted trends and seasonal cycles. An uncertainty is computed for all interpolated values based on the spatial and temporal range of the...

Assessing rainfall erosivity indices through synthetic precipitation series and artificial neural networks Anais da ABC (AABC)
CECíLIO,ROBERTO A.; MOREIRA,MICHEL C.; PEZZOPANE,JOSé EDUARDO M.; PRUSKI,FERNANDO F.; FUKUNAGA,DANILO C..
The rainfall parameter that expresses the capacity to promote soil erosion is called rainfall erosivity (R), and is commonly represented by the indexes EI30 and KE>25. The calculations of these indexes requires pluviographical records, that are difficult to obtain in Brazil. This paper describes the use of synthetic rainfall series to compute EI30 and KE>25 in Espírito Santo State (Brazil). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were also developed to spatially interpolate R values in Espírito Santo. EI30 and KE>25 indexes values were close to those calculated on a homogeneous area according to the similarity of rainfall distribution; indicating the applicability of the use of synthetic rainfall series to estimate the R factor. ANNs had a better...

Data-Driven Interpolation of Sea Level Anomalies Using Analog Data Assimilation ArchiMer
Lguensat, Redouane; Viet, Phi Huynh; Sun, Miao; Chen, Ge; Fenglin, Tian; Chapron, Bertrand; Fablet, Ronan.
From the recent developments of data-driven methods as a means to better exploit large-scale observation, simulation and reanalysis datasets for solving inverse problems, this study addresses the improvement of the reconstruction of higher-resolution Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) fields using analog strategies. This reconstruction is stated as an analog data assimilation issue, where the analog models rely on patch-based and Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF)-based representations to circumvent the curse of dimensionality. We implement an Observation System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) in the South China Sea. The reported results show the relevance of the proposed framework with a significant gain in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for scales below 100...

Geração de mapas de produtividade para experimentos com milho no âmbito de fazenda. Infoteca-e
SHIRATSUCHI, L. S..
ABSTRACT: Many farmers do not use precision agriculture tools due to high equipment costs and lack of knowledge about this new approach. A number of farmers have, however, conducted on-farm experiments without the help of these new and still expensive tools. One of most important equipments for precision agriculture practices is the crop yield monitor. It can also be used for on-farm experiments to collect yield data, reducing costs and paybacks. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effects of combine header distance on corn harvest accuracy of yield maps. Conventional yield map was statistically compared with five maps generated by removing 2, 4, 6, 8 e 10 combine header width generated by a GIS-based software package. Two interpolations were made, i....

Identification and characterisation of winter spawning ground in the English Channel and Southern North Sea ArchiMer
Lelievre, Stephanie.
A better knowledge and monitoring of principal commercial fish spawning grounds have become necessary in the North Sea. The efficiency of CUFES was proved by sampling pelagic fish eggs in winter in Eastern Channel and Southern North Sea. Fish egg taxonomic identification based on visual criteria cannot always be carried out effectively. In particular, cod (Gadus morhua), and whiting (Merlangius merlangus) or flounder (Platichthys flesus) and dab (Limanda limanda) have the same range of egg diameter and similar morphologies. Alternative identification methods using molecular techniques were developed to improve the accuracy of egg taxonomic identification. First, PCR-RFLP method, then, in order to accelerate egg identification, the use of a new laboratory...

Intercomparison of data-driven and learning-based interpolations of along-track Nadir and wide-swath Swot altimetry observations ArchiMer
Beauchamp, Maxime; Fablet, Ronan; Ubelmann, Clément; Ballarotta, Maxime; Chapron, Bertrand.
Over the last years, a very active field of research aims at exploring new data-driven and  learning-based methodologies to propose computationally efficient strategies able to benefit from  the large amount of observational remote sensing and numerical simulations for the reconstruction,  interpolation and prediction of high-resolution derived products of geophysical fields. In this paper,  we investigate how they might help to solve for the oversmoothing of the state-of-the-art optimal  interpolation (OI) techniques in the reconstruction of sea surface height (SSH) spatio-temporal  fields. We focus on two small 10° x 10° GULFSTREAM and 8° x 10° OSMOSIS regions, part  of the North-Atlantic basin: the GULFSTREAM area is mainly driven by energetic...

Neural Network Based Kalman Filters for the Spatio-Temporal Interpolation of Satellite-Derived Sea Surface Temperature ArchiMer
Ouala, Said; Fablet, Ronan; Herzet, Cedric; Chapron, Bertrand; Pascual, Ananda; Collard, Fabrice; Gaultier, Lucile.
The forecasting and reconstruction of oceanic dynamics is a crucial challenge. While model driven strategies are still the state-of-the-art approaches in the reconstruction of spatio-temporal dynamics. The ever increasing availability of data collections in oceanography raised the relevance of data-driven approaches as computationally efficient representations of spatio-temporal fields reconstruction. This tools proved to outperform classical state-of-the-art interpolation techniques such as optimal interpolation and DINEOF in the retrievement of fine scale structures while still been computationally efficient comparing to model based data assimilation schemes. However, coupling this data-driven priors to classical filtering schemes limits their potential...

Optimization of sample design sizes and shapes for regionalized variables using simulated annealing Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Guedes,Luciana P.C; Uribe-Opazo,Miguel A; Ribeiro Junior,Paulo J.
The spatial variability of structures in regionalized variables are defined with the aid of geostatistical techniques, which facilitate the estimation of values for these variables in unsampled localizations and generate thematic maps to be used in decision making for localized treatments in the area under study. The quality of these maps depends on the trustworthiness of these estimates that can be modified with the choice for the sample design. The objective of this work was to establish an optimal size and shape of the sample designs in order to enhance the efficiency of sampling plans for the prediction of space dependent variables. These designs were obtained with the use of a stochastic search method called Simulated Annealing. This method is based...

Spatial variability of sugarcane row gaps: measurement and mapping Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Molin,José Paulo; Veiga,João Paulo Soto.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane is a very important crop in Brazil, used as food production and biofuel, providing 18% of the total primary energy in the country. An important requirement to high yield is a good uniformity in the sugarcane field, which is impaired due to row gaps that appear since the first year of sugarcane crop caused by planting failures, harvesting damages, machinery traffic, pests, diseases and others. The aim of this study is to develop a system based on a photoelectric sensor to scan the field, georeferencing gaps representing them as a map. A data logger integrates the data from the photoelectric sensors, an encoder and a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and measures the distance between plants, defining the gaps. Tests under...

Variação do espaçamento entre faixas de colheita na geração de mapas de produtividade. Infoteca-e
SHIRATSUCHI, L. S.; MACHADO, A. L. T..
